• For Katrina

    Mother,
    Where are you?

    I was at work
    When the water came,

    Escaped to this dark
    Damp
    Crowded
    Hellish refuge.

    You were at home
    With my
    Little ones.

    Did you make
    Higher ground?

    Did you?

    Mother,
    Where are you?

  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Grandpa,
    Don’t leave us
    Now.
    We left home
    To the water,
    Made our way
    Here
    Where it’s dark
    And it’s damp,
    But help
    Will come,
    Should come,
    Sometime soon.

    I know you’re
    Tired
    And scared.
    But Grandpa,
    Don’t leave us
    Now.

  • Parade

    The parade has passed.
    Decorations litter
    Where the crowd
    Stood, excited
    By the marching ranks,
    Cheering them on,
    Hoisting little children
    For a better view,
    And waving flags
    Of loyalty.

    On the curb,
    Head bowed, he stood,
    Contemplating
    The price these men,
    Like so many
    Generations past,
    Would have to pay.

    Then in the settling dusk,
    He whispered a prayer,
    Shed a tear,
    And limped away.

  • Inauguration 2009

    Shivering
    With cold
    Shivering
    With excitement
    Tears
    In our eyes
    For an impossible
    Dream
    Coming true.
    Shouting
    Singing
    Our joy
    The greater
    For hope delayed
    For those
    Who struggled
    But passed
    Before the day.
